How it all started

Duni's first product, the waxed paper cup, has a story if its own.

It all started in 1914 during a train journey where Dr. Crumbine, a Texas district medical officer, prevented a little girl from getting infected with the TB virus. She was about to drink water from the same glass as a TB infected man had used a couple of minutes earlier. Dr. Crumbine stopped her in the nick of time and offered her a mug that he himself had folded from a paper.

The event that took place gave the doctor an idea to invent a hygienic disposable cup made out of paper – an easy and inexpensive way to prevent the TB disease from spreading.

In the late 1940's Marcus Rosendal, managing director at Billingsfors Bruk (which later became a part of Duni), was on a trip to the United States and laid eyes on the cup. He realized the business opportunity of this product and bought two American manufacturing machines. They were first installed in Dals Långed, where the production of the waxed paper cup started in 1949. The machines were later on moved to Halmstad. The waxed paper cups were produced till the end of the 1990's, but the machines are still in the possession of Duni and can be spotted at the Duni headquarter in Malmö.
